The Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum celebrates the early history of Wetaskiwin and area. The Museum serves the public by documenting and telling the stories of the courageous individuals who settled here to create the city and district.
Housed in a centrally located, landmark building, it offers a chance to view three floors of exhibits. The large, visible facility has enabled the museum to expand upon its mission to preserve the community's heritage. The premises are wheelchair friendly with elevator access to all three levels. Visitors have year round access to the Museum to enjoy special events and view displays. Canada Day and Pioneer Day celebrations and exhibit openings at the museum continue to be popular events, often marked by games, quizzes and contests. Each year the Museum bestows a "Pioneer of the Year Award" to honour an individual that has helped contribute to the growth of the area and has made a significant contribution to the community. There is always something new to see at the Museum as displays are changed, enhanced, and improved.
Group tours and school tours are welcomed and continue to increase as children's programs are expanded and developed. The Heritage Museum hosts hundreds of elementary school students each year in the Children's Legacy Center. Programs have been designed to enhance the curriculum of Grades K - 4. Hands-on activities are encouraged through play, as gentle touching is allowed in the Children's Museum. Butter making, wool carding, using a scrub board to wash clothes and shopping in a vintage General store are just some of the activities offered. School programs enable youngsters to experience life as it was for the early pioneers. The Women of Aspenland is an on-going project presently featuring an increasing number of local notable women, selected since 1996. The Women of Aspenland were all who were instrumental in serving the community and leading community groups, while balancing the demands of rural life and motherhood. One of their stories will be featured and added to the list here each month. |
